Waitangi Weekend Trip to the Catlins
To my alarm, I wasn’t able to book the Tautuku Lodge for Waitangi weekend, so I booked it for the following weekend; Saturday 10th February. Tautuku lodge accommodates up to 12 people; $12 for the night for F&B members.
It’s in the Lenz reserve, which contains kamahi-podocarp forest and has three walking tracks. There is a boardwalk on the coastal side of the road, and fernbirds might be seen, as well as the mudflat inhabitants. There are numerous walks in the Catlins area, and I think that if the weather is suitable, the best option for Sunday would be the Catlins river valley track, which can be done as a single walk (5 hours one way), or as one of the three divisions - a 1-hour walk from Wisp to Wallace Stream; 1.5 hours Wallace Stream to Frank’s Creek; then a further 2.5 hours from Franks Creek to Tawanui. Mohua can sometimes be seen or heard here.
